Meet The Team

Dato' Dr Amar-Singh HSS

Amar is a Consultant Paediatrician and has been a bird watcher for around 50 years. He has published two bird books, a number of bird research articles, written many articles on birds and contributed to many books, online bird image & audio databases. He is interested in spending time getting to know bird behaviour and considers himself a bird-friend.

Lim Kim Chye

After retiring as a Laboratory Technician, Kim Chye worked for the Malaysian Nature Society as its Ornithological Officer where he wrote up the proposal for Kinta Nature Park. He then left the Society to do consultative work on birds and other fauna. He has been birding since his teens and has co-authored research papers on Malayan Whistling-thrush, hornbills, raptor migration and the field guide "Birds of Malaysia". He likes birding the old-school way with Swee Yian, his long-time birding buddy.

Lim Swee Yian

Yian bought Ben King's "Field Guide to Birds of South-East Asia" after her first trip to Taman Negara, in order to identify a bird she saw. It was a White-rumped Shama and she has never looked back since. While still teaching, she often volunteered as a field assistant on many of Kim Chye's bird projects. Her home being on the migration flyway, she spent many autumns monitoring raptors. She has contributed to many articles on raptor migration and co-authored the book, "Birds of Perak, Peninsular Malaysia and where to see them. Now retired, she spends most of her time birding with Kim Chye.

Choy Wai Mun

Wai Mun started birding when he was in his teenage years and it immediately became one of his true passions in life. Unfortunately, birding could not really put food on the table and it remains more of a hobby. It was only after more than a decade of birding that he decided to try and keep his colourful and memorable experiences alive through photography. He have been given the responsibility as eBird reviewer for four regions in Peninsular Malaysia that is Perak, Perlis, Kedah and Pulau Pinang. It will not make him any more popular among the birding community but ensuring that only usable data is submitted for these regions is his small contribution towards the bird life in Malaysia.

Advisors

Dave Bakewell

Dave Bakewell comes from the UK but has made Malaysia his home since 1988 when he started work for the Asian Wetland Bureau (now part of Wetlands International). He has had a lifelong interest in birds, and in particular, bird migration and shorebirds. During the 20 years Dave and his family spent living in Penang, he spent many hours watching birds, and was fortunate to sight a then unknown shorebird species which was subsequently described as White-faced Plover Anarhynchus dealbatus. In 2020, Dave and his family migrated east to Sarawak, Malaysia, where he has continued to be fascinated by the avifauna of the region. He supports conservation through his voluntary work with the Malaysian Nature Society, the Wild Bird Club of Malaysia and the Shorebirds Peninsular Malaysia Project, among others.

Allen Jeyarajasingam

Allen has been interested in natural history as a child and picked up birdwatching in 1968 at the age of 9. He has contributed numerous articles and papers in nature magazines and journals in Malaysia and abroad. A school teacher by profession, Allen used to teach English at a government boarding school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, until his retirement in 2019. He is a member of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and sits on the Bird Conservation Council of the society. He served as chairman of the council from 1999 – 2002 and was also chairman of the Records Committee from 1998 – 2005. He was one of the editors of the Council’s Bimonthly Bulletin ‘Suara Enggang’ (Voice of the Hornbill). He has co-authored ‘Birds –A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore’ and ‘A Field Guide to the Birds of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore’.
